Selling everything to anyone forces you to spread yourself thin and not gain
enough impact. Think about your possible customer groups and segment by type or geographic area. E.g. Homeowners remodeling in the San Fernando Valley or Single Dwelling Building Companies in North Dallas.  

Pick up to 3 groups and focus all your marketing on those for a minimum of 3 months. You will naturally choose better marketing tactics for your chosen group and be more successful Don’t deviate your attentions. You can market to another 3 segments in the next 3 months.

The absolute golden rule of successful marketing is planning. Do a 3-6 month plan so as not to overwhelm yourself. Determine how much money you want to spend, and then choose marketing strategies that will best communicate to your target markets and generate leads. E.g. A monthly promotional e-newsletter or a Google Adwords campaign for new leads. Finally, create a weekly schedule for marketing tasks you must do every week.

“But I don’t have time” I hear you say. Find a savvy graduate who is hungry for experience and comes with a wealth of creative expertise. For just a few hours a week they can help you complete your marketing schedule. Contact your local Colleges for candidates.

Most businesses have pots of gold and don’t even know it. The pots of gold are their past and current customers. They already love you and it won’t be a stretch for them to do business with you again. 

A great way to generate business from them is to add a new product to your line, introduce it to them with a clever promotion, and then watch the leads come in. Remember if they are not interested at that point-in-time, they will most likely recommend you and the product to their friends.    

Turn your customer into business advocates.  Simply writing them a thank you
note, putting in a thank you call or sending them a gift is a great way to solidify a strong relationship with them. The more they like you, the more they will sing your praises from the hill tops. Don’t be afraid to ask them to refer you, and offer them a gift if one of their friends become a customer. For example a $50 Macy’s card.

Yep, it is time to clean house and get back to the fundamentals.
